Hur Hur

Are you sorry yet?

Pygmy rabbits surrender to “Endangered” status; Die celebrating futility.

From FoxNews.com, it would seem that, despite the most well-intentioned efforts of environmentalists and pygmy rabbit specialists, that 16 of a group of 20 pygmy rabbits returned to the wild have been eaten. This is an untold ecological tragedy to befall the only known rabbit that digs its own burrows. To have been plucked from your hand-hewn burrow, put under the glaring probes of the Game & Fish Department, taught ease and comfort by having your food delivered in easy-to-masticate pellet form and water delivered in that delightful lick-bottle, and then to be jarred back to reality by being jammed back in your burrow - it’s no wonder the pygmy rabbit population is suffering. They’re probably standing at the foot of their burrow, with their little pygmy rabbit luggage gripped in their paws, still reeling from the adventure. Before they can get their bad-ass pygmy-rabbit-in-the-great-wild self back, they get plucked up and eaten.

Qué bummer, eh?

This reminds me of the time that two seals were rescued from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and some $50,000 per seal was spent cleaning up and rehabilitating them. With great fanfare and sentimentality they were re-released to the ocean and with equal fanfare they were immediately devoured by an Orca. In front of everyone. And, the press.

Perhaps a wip antenna and orange flag wasn’t the best way to keep them hidden from predators.
