Anniversary

Tomorrow is my parents’ 37th wedding anniversary. I want to emphasize the 37-year part. Especially in this era when many marriages barely make it to the 5-year mark.
What an achievement! 37 years of tolerating each others bizarre habits. 37 years of raising five children into productive adulthood (myself notwithstanding). 37 years of laundry, cooking, and cleaning. 37 years of laughing, teasing, joking. 37 years of crying, pestering, convincing, and possibly an occasionally episode of coercing. 37 years of persistence.
Maybe it’s unromantic to acknowledge the work that goes into marriage. It’s a lot of work. But it’s the sort of companionship of like goals and the desire to succeed as a unit that makes the work feel not lessened, but definitely shared.
37 years. Well done, indeed. I think in 3 years we need to have on hellacious family reunion party down here in the Land of Enchantment. Any takers?
