Terrified
Posted by E-George on January 22, 2008
Today was the first day of class. My first class was ECE 101 and today’s subject was about some of the rules and standards for the School of Engineering. I learned something new today: ECE and the School of Engineering have a three-strikes policy.
It is as bad as it sounds. If you take a class and either fail it or drop it after the 6-week deadline, and you do this twice (in a row or not, doesn’t matter) when you take the third time you have to get a C or better. If you take it the third time and go all the way through and come out with a D you’re still effed. If you don’t succeed in completing and/or passing this class three times in a row you are BARRED from admission to the School of Engineering.
Oh. My. GAAAWWWDDDD!
I blacked out briefly and turned seven shades of oh-shit sitting there listening to this. I’m on my third attempt to complete and pass Physics 2. How effed am I? Decidedly effed. I went and talked to the undergraduate advisor (who is a well-spring of all knowledge, evidently) about this and she confirmed that I have to pass Physics this time or I will be excised from the program like a malignant mole, even though I’m already accepted to the School of Engineering.
There is nothing quite like this kind of pressure. This pressure is now sitting in my stomach like a lead anvil, slowly poisoning me and causing delusional visions. I fear for my future now. Lucky. Before I was just thinking it would take me longer if I had to keep taking physics over. Now, I understand the totality of the situation: Pass Physics or be stripped of any future, technical educational opportunity at UNM.
I would seem that I am campaigning hard to become the mayor of the Village of Idiots. And, as of today, I’ve won the party nomination.

Not to worry. You will pass it and you will surprise yourself with the grade you will get. To (almost) quote Chevy Chase:
“Be the physics class!”
