Show no weakness

Matthew has been pretty good about calling me in the evenings around 9:00pm (9:30am a day ahead in India). Since neither of us are really chit-chatters, these calls don’t really exceed 5-10 minutes. Add to this that Matthew is calling me from his office location in India and is surrounded by his all-male development team (who you can hear churning away in the background). This means our normally perfunctory conversations are made even more sterile to stave off any opportunity for his development team to perceive any sentimental weakness. Two nights ago was a prime example of this rigorous guarding of reputation:
Me: Hi, honey. How’s it going over there?
Matthew: Good. Really good. You?
Me: Fine. I miss you.
Matthew: Yes, I know. You, too. (pause) Um… (pause) Well… (pause) Shakespeare said some stuff and so forth.
Me: Shakespeare said some stuff and so forth? I’m so blogging this.
Matthew: (heavy sigh). You know what I meant.
Yes, I do. Back atcha, dear.

i wish to know specifically what mpb was referencing with his shakespeare reference. presumably not ‘et tu brute’ nor the likes of puck, the wood sprite…

I think he was making an all-encompassing reference to the exchanged romantic drivelings of Shakespearean lovers.
