My goals against your resolutions
Posted by E-George on January 2, 2009
I asked Matthew the other night if he had any resolutions for 2009. He sternly replied, “No!” and followed it up with, “But, I do have some goals for the year.” Yes, children, there is a difference. RESOLUTIONS are for quitting after four weeks, whereas GOALS are long-discussed somewhat unfocused visions of a future state that may or may not actually see achievement. To say one has resolved to do something such as, say, curse less, and then they continue cursing their entire strength of character is called into question because they demonstrated that they have no actual resolve to curse less, whereas to have the goal to curse less and still curse doesn’t have quite the character debasing effect. Besides, GOALS sound much loftier than RESOLUTIONS. That’s my view on it, at least.
So, I have some GOALS:
- Raise Evelyn
- Try not to win the Crap Mom award for 2009.
- Get to work on time or early each work day.
- Drink no more than 1-2 caffeine-free diet sodas per week.
- On the days I’m home from work take Evelyn for a long walk, even if it is only on the treadmill.
- Actually employ the exercise ball for exercise.
- Actually exercise the at least 4 times per week to start reduction of the post-baby done-lops.
- Stick to our family budget.
- Have monthly budgeting summits with my husband.
- Try a church bible study.
- Get all our music put to the NAS device and the CDs sold.
- Put the money from the CD sales towards the mortgage.
- Create a direct-to-DVD release of “Evelyn 2008: The Beginning”.
- Create 2006/2007/2008 individual year movies cataloging that year’s events.
- Get a passport.
- Learn how to use Final Cut Pro, and its companion softwares Soundtrack and LiveType.
I think that’s enough to keep me busy. Besides, I doubt I’ll be able to accomplish 50% of that list, but because they are GOALS, I’ll be able to explain away my failure with a subtle wave of the hand and a pithy, “I’ve extended that goal into next year.”

spenser said,
you may always “revisit your goals” and “adapt your trajectory” periodically to best suit the changing needs of the passing days.
