13 Months

October was a welcome relief of busyness. Evelyn’s walking improved every day until she didn’t have to hold her hands like she was in a stick up any more. We settled more into the house, got a new couch, and closed the pool down for the season. Most of the month was spent just catching our breath, but towards the middle of the month we all took a trip out to Moriarty and visited the McCall’s Pumpkin Patch. This was probably the most free range control Evelyn had up to that point. So, we strapped on the monkey leash and let her direct where she wanted to go, what she wanted to see, and choose what she wanted to do and how long she wanted to do it. We spent just over three hours wandering around, mostly sitting and selecting rocks and investigating straw piles.
This month was the first participatory Halloween! Granted, I’m not a huge fan of Halloween – it isn’t one of my favorite holidays. Plus, given the restrictions of our particular household giving out candy just isn’t in the cards. However, we felt somewhat obligated to be involved after several neighbors talked about how popular the area was to trick-or-treaters. Plus, we also knew that the new house wasn’t conducive to pretending to not be at home. Stupid open, well-lit floor plan.
Evelyn’s Auntie Kayla came to the rescue in the costume department by shipping us a pumpkin outfit worn by her daughter. Plus, we had a backup outfit of a set of pink pajamas with glow-in-the-dark bones painted on. So, on Halloween day we toddled off to Costco and loaded up on Nutrigrain bars, Slim Jims, and Goldfish crackers knowing that the word would spread quickly and we would certainly be the unpopular house. Which was OK by Evelyn and Matthew who greedily hoarded the slim jims. <Shudder>
And, that night we dolled up and went trick-or-treating. Of the seven or so houses that we rang the door bell, Evelyn was given double doses of candy at nearly Every. Single. House. So by the time we got home her wee bucket was filled to over flowing with contraband. Luckily, Evelyn hasn’t really been introduced to candy yet, so she could have cared less that her bucket was a heaping hill of diabolical blood glucose napalm and was more interested in taking all of it out of the bucket and putting it all back in again exerting an endless cycle of amusement. At nights end, though, we sent her candy home with Asher who is nearly 4 years old and far more educated in the appropriate uses of candy than Evelyn.
Blessed.
