Boughts of insomnia
Posted by E-George on December 13, 2009
Since moving into the new house I have absolutely had the hardest time sleeping well. I can’t put my finger on why, exactly, but for about 10 days out of each month I’m either waking up every two hours like a newborn, or my eyes fly open at 1:30am and refuse to close again until nearly 5am.
Hydration? I suppose that’s possible, but I drink like a horse that’s been rode hard across Monument Valley most days, which I think explains the up-ever-two-hours thing at night.
Diet? I’ve changed my diet, but in a fairly trivial way. I still eat the same low-to-no-carb lifestyle, but now I eat smaller portions several times per day instead of three large portions.
Worry? What could I have to be worried about? I have the more agreeable child, the nicest house, the most eager mother-in-law, and the most dedicated husband.
As it turns out, it was hunger. I was eating my small portions at dinner, and going to bed feeling a little hungry. Then, I would wake up in the middle of the night starving enough that I would gladly feast on the ass of a dead rhino if it were available with a nice au jus. Once I would get up, get a bowl of cereal of a piece of toast I could get to sleep again about an hour after. So, now the trick is going to be to minimize my portions throughout the day and either keep a small portion at dinner and have a snack before bedtime, or up my dinner portion such that I’m not willing to gnaw on my bedside table to quell the symphony of hunger growls.
